Our STORY

The Doi Intanon was first opened over 20 years ago in 2000 by Chris and Busara with the aim of bringing an authentic Thai experience to the Lake District.

Very sadly in December 2020 we lost our beautiful Busara Knight to cancer. She was adored by everyone who met her and is our guiding light.

Busara inspires us to keep going forward no matter the challenge, in the knowledge that she is proud and smiling down on us.

After 20 years of running Doi Intanon with Busara, Christopher Knight has decided to retire from the restaurant and will follow the path that opens up him.

The restaurant is now in the hands of the Chefs who have been the main cooks for 20 years and is working with their son who ensures the quality and standard of
service.

Our Food

We offer a wide array of classic dishes from Thailand cooked by our Head Chefs, who have had more than 30 years of experience in a Thai kitchen. They were taught and mentored by a chef in Thailand for over 10 years and quickly rose to become head chefs themselves in a busy fast paced environment.

Some of the recipes they use at Doi Intanon has been passed down by their Thai parents and grandparents, who as we typically know are usually amazing at making food.

Every dish is prepared & made in our kitchen from the smallest Chicken Spring Rolls to the innovative dish of green curry Emerald Seabass.

You can expect the bursting fragrance of the marinated Weeping Tiger passing through the air served on a red-hot sizzling stone. Even our Sweet Chilli sauce is made here!

What People Say

We visit here every year when in Ambleside and it’s consistently good. The food is delicious with lots of choice on the menu, plus specials and the service is really friendly and efficient. Make sure you book in advance as they are always very busy in my experience.

This was a random booking and a wonderful surprise. Deliciously flavoured food, served by friendly efficient staff and set in beautiful surroundings. My companion and I are both vegan - the veggie/vegan menu was pretty extensive and the three dishes we tried were very good indeed - but there is a larger meat/fish menu which I would assume is equally good.

Lovely food, great service. Would go back if we was in Ambleside again. This was the only restaurant that put a service charge ( does say voluntary) on the bill out of all the restaurants in the lakes that we visited. Just my opinion, but I prefer to give my own tip amount, but understand why some restaurants automatically include a service charge. The food was great and thank you for a nice meal.

First visit to this lovely restaurant. Staff were very friendly, special thank you to Kim for looking after us and recommending some dishes for us to try. The food was amazing well presented and absolutely delicious. We managed all 3 courses, really great food. Thank you for an enjoyable evening. Staff are a credit to this lovely restaurant.

The food here was delicious and very reasonably priced. Service was good and despite the reservation details saying we would need to vacate the table after an hour and a half there was no pressure to leave and we left when we were ready.

Excellent flavours and the owners are chefs with years of experience cooking great dishes. So good in fact we dined here twice. Even the Thai sweet chili sauce is homemade. Give it a whirl it's a good feed and desert was tasty too.

Food is authentic, fresh and served with a smile. This is our 3rd visit to this restaurant over a couple of years & the standard of service & food has increased (which is hard as it was great on the first visit).

My boyfriend and I visited here on our last night in the Lake District and we loved it. The staff were wonderful and gave great advice on a Thai salad to try. My boyfriend in particular loved the salad recommendation saying it’s the best Thai salad he’d ever had. We had satay and duck spring rolls for starter and then phad thai with Thai red curry and rice. We couldn’t fault it! I was so full and I desperately wished I wasn’t as people around us were having dessert, what looked like hot doughnut balls which I’d 100% have ordered. If we ever come back to the Lakes, we’ll be sure to go here.

Excellent food, highly recommended the combination starter.

We visited two nights in a row as the food was so good, and the only negative observation is the standard of service, whilst at all times was pleasant, varied from very attentive (upstairs) to very distracted (downstairs), but a minor point and the food more than made up for having to attract the waiter’s attention to order etc.
